Forza9 Cyprus gift tip:

CONTRASTS by Sue Mercer

Sue Mercer captures the beauty of Cyprus in watercolour and acrylics: landscapes, coastal scenes, floral and some still-life themes. She is fascinated by the textures, colours and shapes of old boats and buildings.

After working mainly in watercolours for many years, she now also works regularly in acrylics to achieve bolder and more striking results. But she also likes to use other media such as pastels, pen and wash, collage and/or other effects to develop her ideas when the subject matter dictates. Her recent paintings, which are focused on boats and water, show the influence of that her husband’s involvement with the sea, both as a professional yacht skipper and a leisure sailor has had on her work.

Sue Mercer studied Textile design at Leicester Polytechnic in the 1960’s and subsequently worked as a designer in Lancashire U.K. for some years before going to live in the Middle East with her husband. After returning to England in 1983 she lived in the west of England where she exhibited in many shows and galleries and undertook commissions of a variety of subjects including boats, houses, landscapes and murals.

Sue Mercer lives in Cyprus since 2006.  "I have found the light, colours and contrasts in my surroundings very inspiring. I try to capture this intensity in my work, from the most delicate wildflowers to dramatic ruins and rocky coastlines."

Sue Mercer also teaches watercolour painting to adult students.
